The contents of the box changes from week to week depending on what’s in season, usually with a total volume of a heaping half bushel. Volume will vary a little depending on the texture of the items at that time of year. A typical spring box may have lettuce, chard, radishes, onions, carrots, kale and turnips. A summer box might have summer squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, okra, potatoes, and sweet corn. Fall brings sweet potatoes, winter squash, beets, and frost sweetened greens and lettuce again. We plant to maximize the variety in your box.
We really do get this question a lot! Fresh, local food tastes the best, hands down. We also use sustainable management techniques that try to balance nutrients in the soil so that the produce has a stress free growing experience without excesses or deficiencies of any nutrient. Mineral rich rock powders are used to raise the mineral level in the soil in an effort to produce the best vegetables possible. Mineral rich soils produce “sweet” crops!
We use absolutely NO chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides or fungicides. We choose not to be "certified" organic due to the red tape involved with government certification. In many ways we are actually more conservative than the National Organic Standards require. For instance, there are some products that are OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approves that we feel should be used sparingly. Also, plastic mulch is not used extensively on our farm. It seems to us not to be very sustainable.
When you buy certified organic you certainly get a better product than the conventional counterpart. We are by no means discouraging that. However, we do not believe that the government can “legislate” the regulations for growing superior food. It is an art as well as science!
Typically the majority of your box will be picked the day before or the day of delivery. If bad weather is expected on the normal harvest day, produce might have to be picked the day before, but that is the exception, not the rule. Also, some vegetables such as summer squash are best harvested young and refrigerated to maintain peak eating quality, and typical storage crops like potatoes and winter squash are harvested at once and stored for a greater length of time.
The CSA boxes are all packed the same. You cannot choose what goes into your individual box. Many people actually find that this encourages them to try new vegetables, and helps them realize that fresh, locally grown veggies can taste a world apart from certain supermarket versions that they thought they didn’t care for. We also have many wonderful recipes on the website that include the vast majority of vegetables you will be receiving.
Please find your name in the list on the clipboard and sign that you picked your share up. Then take a box out of the stack. Also, on occasion there may be items not suited to packing in the box, such as herbs, that are also for CSA customers. There will always be staff there to guide you.
No. It is nearly impossible to keep up with who’s picking up where if it changes every week. However, a very occasional pickup location change can usually be accommodated.
No. To avoid confusion at the pickup site we request that the entire share be taken by the first person picking up the box. You are responsible for meeting or dividing the shares with whomever you are sharing. However, it may be possible for you to leave one half of the share in grocery bags or other boxes for the other person to pick up. You will be required to clearly label the bag/box and you are responsible for communicating and coordinating the pickup with the person with whom you are sharing.
The best choice would be to have a friend or relative pick your box up for you. Have them sign for you under your name. If that is impossible, email as far in advance as possible. A very occasional pickup location change can usually be accommodated, but you must email at least the day before the pickup as we have to know before we pack the truck.
Please note that it is not possible to change pickup days from Wed. to Sat. or vice versa. Produce is picked twice per week for maximum freshness and CSA deliveries are balanced on that picking schedule.
Any shares not picked up at the time and location that you sign up for (unless other arrangements have been made) will be given away or composted.
Yes. Please email and set up a time. Due to the massive amount of work that goes in to producing quality vegetables, some times of year may be easier than others. Please have patience!! Our location information is here.
Yes. Boxes of certain produce can be special ordered when in season. Just inquire about what you are interested in, and I will give you the box price and quantity. Please be aware that we may not be able to offer large quantities of specific vegetables unless I have an abundance, even though they may be offered consistently in the CSA or at the farmer’s market.
For smaller quantities than boxes please visit us at a farmer’s market that we attend.
