We use absolutely NO chemical fertilizers, GMOs, herbicides, pesticides or fungicides. We choose not to be “certified” organic due to the expensive red tape involved with government certification that would cause us to raise prices. Our customers prefer our transparent relationship with them and their food over a label anyways. However, in many ways, we are actually more conservative than the National Organic Standards require. For instance, there are certain products that are OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approves that we feel should be used sparingly. When you buy certified organic you certainly do get a better product than the conventional counterpart. We are by no means discouraging that. However, we do not believe that the government can “legislate” the regulations for growing superior food. It is an art and a relationship as well as science!
Why do your vegetables taste so good?
We really do get this question a lot! Fresh, local food tastes the best, hands down. We also use sustainable management techniques that try to balance nutrients in the soil so that the produce has a stress free growing experience without excesses or deficiencies of any nutrient. Mineral rich rock powders are used to raise the mineral level in the soil in an effort to produce the best vegetables possible. Mineral rich soils produce “sweet” crops Can we visit the farm?
Yes. Please email and set up a time. Due to the massive amount of work that goes in to producing quality vegetables, some times of year may be easier than others. Our location information is here. Interested in using our produce in your business?
We supply not only our market and CSA customers with the best produce, but we also provide restaurants, grocers, bakeries, juicers, and more. If you're looking for amazing tasting produce in bulk, let's talk! |
When is the produce picked?
Typically the majority of produce will be picked the day before or the day of. If bad weather is expected on the normal harvest day, produce might have to be picked the day before, but that is the exception, not the rule. Also, some vegetables such as summer squash are best harvested young and refrigerated to maintain peak eating quality, and typical storage crops like potatoes and winter squash are harvested at once and stored for a greater length of time. Can I purchase extra vegetables?
Yes. Boxes of certain produce can be special ordered when in season. Just inquire about what you are interested in, and I will give you the box price and quantity. Please be aware that we may not be able to offer large quantities of specific vegetables unless I have an abundance, even though they may be offered consistently in the CSA or at the farmer’s market. For smaller quantities than boxes please visit us at a farmer’s market that we attend. What are some of the fertilizers and weed controls you use?
Because we are natural growers, we use earthy, stinky things like fish emulsion and livestock compost. We get manure from the chickens and cows on the farm. We use proper soil health to inhibit weeds as well as a flamer to kill them. Most of all we do our best to grow healthy plants. A strong plant is the best defense against pests and weedy invaders. We will never use chemical herbicides or pesticides anywhere at anytime. |
